The source of vampirism is the Human Vampiric Virus (HVV) which is usually associated with Rabies.
Stage One (Infection) - Within hours of being bitten, the victim develops a headache, fever, chills and other flu-like symptoms as the body tries hard to fight off the infection. The symptoms can be easily confused with more common viral infections, although the presence of bite marks on the body are often enough to confirm the diagnosis. This particular stage generally lasts between six and twelve hours.
Stage Two (Vampiric Coma) - Within twenty four hours of being bitten, the victim will slip into a vampiric coma. During this worrying phase, the pulse slows, breathing is shallow and pupils are dilated. The large number of people mistakenly buried alive while in a vampiric coma gave rise to the myth that vampires sleep in coffins as explained on the prior page. Occasionally, people think that anyone infected with HVV turns into a vampire, in fact only a small percentage survive the horrific coma. Generally, the young, the old and the feeble never come out of these comas and sadly die. The wide majority of people who actually survive a vampiric coma are males between the age of eighteen to thirty five. Vampiric comas usually last only one day, when the victim awakens the night after it begins.
Stage Three (Transformation) - A bite victim who survives the vampiric coma will wake as a fully grown vampire. Most vampires then begin to hunt within twenty four hours of transformation.
